Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) | Mountain Vista Recovery

IOP is a journey.

What is Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP)?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are treatment programs used to address addictions, depression, or other dependencies that do not require detoxification or round-the-clock supervision. They enable patients to continue with their normal, day-to-day lives in a way that residential treatment programs do not. While residential treatment requires that clients reside on-site, clients in intensive outpatient programs live at home or in a sober living setting.

Ideal candidates for intensive outpatient treatment have a safe home environment. This means encouraging family members and friends who are ready to support their loved one in their recovery efforts. If a person lives with other people who use drugs or drink, residential treatment is generally recommended to get the person away from these triggers for relapse.

How Does IOP Work?

Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) helps clients pursue everyday activities, while also addressing their substance addiction, associated learned behaviors and psychological contributing factors. IOP treatment and other outpatient treatments consist of weekly counseling, therapy, relapse prevention, or other sessions.

IOP is tailored to the unique needs of each client, and offers continued support and structure, with multiple therapy sessions conducted throughout the week, in group, individual, and even family group formats. Different therapy modalities are used help you learn to cope with substance abuse and the associated mental health conditions and social consequences of addiction.

About IOP

Is MVR IOP Right for Me?

Mountain Vista Recovery IOP is right for anyone who needs intense outpatient treatment for substance abuse, and weekly, sustained support in recovery from addiction. Intensive Outpatient Programming is right for those who:

  • Have two or more disorders (ex: a substance use disorder with a mental health disorder)
  • Have been discharged from an emergency room and require immediate treatment for substance use disorder
  • Are transitioning out of inpatient treatment
  • Need intensive therapy but a PHP or SACOT program (25+ hours weekly) is not for you
  • Have legal issues that require you to seek treatment for addiction
  • Don’t need constant supervision in their sobriety, but could benefit from regular therapy

What are the Benefits Of IOP?

Mountain Vista Recovery IOP will set you up for success in several ways. Individual and group therapy sessions help you to address underlying causes of substance use disorder. Unpacking trauma can be difficult – a good IOP program allows you to identify trauma, build confidence, regulate emotions, and so much more, in a supportive environment where your peers and therapists share your experiences.

After IOP treatment, you’ll be equipped with new coping skills that you can carry into your daily life and recovery for years to come. You also leave with a carefully designed after-care plan to follow, and the support of those you met in the program. The main benefits of an IOP include:

  • Minimum time requirement
  • Lower cost than residential or inpatient treatment programs
  • Supportive and vast recovery community with a wide range of daily meetings, activities, meet-ups, and sober lifestyle activities, clubs and groups
  • Various evidence-based therapies, including individual, group, family, or alternative therapies
  • Flexibility to maintain or return to a healthy work environment, school, or family – we want you to be happy
