Families may qualify for child assistance programs if they need child care for a number of reasons, including:

Safelight operates a nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center in Henderson County where children and their families are provided crisis intervention due to abuse. Services at Safelight include:
- A coordinated community effort to provide a one and done interview for children and nonoffending guardians to reduce trauma for a child telling their story at multiple locations and days. Services children who have been had abuse, neglect or exploitation.

The Boys and Girls Club offers several different programs designed to help children be successful, including:
- Power Hour – a supportive environment where attendees can complete their homework with a 45-minute rotation from Monday through Thursday.
- Tutoring – focus on those who may be struggling with reading and math, providing them with one-on-one attention and guidance.

The Child Care Subsidy program uses state and federal funds to provide subsidized child care services to eligible families.
You may be eligible to receive child care assistance if:
- You are working or are attempting to find work
- You are in school or in a job training program
- Your child is receiving child protective services
- Your child needs care to support child welfare services or if your family is experiencing a crisis
- Your child has developmental needs
How to Apply:
- The agency will inform you whether you need to schedule an appointment or simply stop by to apply for services.
- The agency can inform you of the documentation that you need to bring to determine eligibility
- Eligibility determination is valid for 12 months for child care services, provided the family remains eligible.
- The parent must report to a child care social worker in the agency any change in their circumstances that may affect eligibility within 5 working days of the change

The NC Pre-K program helps provide high-quality early childhood education to enhance school readiness. NC Pre-K prepares children for kindergarten through large and small group experiences, center time, music, movement, literacy activities, and opportunities for social emotional development. Child Care is an optional childcare service designed especially for the children of Henderson County Public Schools and their working parents. HCPS Child Care offers PSAM and PSPM in all 13 elementary schools. The programs operate on a self-sufficient basis. Fees are kept as low as possible to provide the necessary revenue to pay staff salaries and purchase supplies. Eligible students are Henderson

North Carolina State law requires that every county provide Child Protective Services in order to ensure the safety of all children in the state. The Department of Social Services is the agency that receives all reports of neglect or abuse, investigates those reports and provides services to maltreated children to prevent abuse or neglect from recurring.

Head Start, NC Pre-K, and Early Head Start provide services in Transylvania, Henderson, and Polk Counties for over 700 children from the ages of birth to five years old. Enrollees are served in 17 different centers in Henderson County, two centers in Transylvania County, and one in Polk County.
Four of the centers utilize Wrap-Around services which lengthen the classroom day and months of the year if needed, to provide child care for parents of children who are working or in job related training. Parents pay for Wrap-Around fees on a sliding scale basis. There is, however, no charge for participation in Head Start or Early Head Start.
Anyone interested in enrolling their child(ren) in one of the Head Start, Early Head Start, NC Pre-K, or Home-Based programs is encouraged to apply.
After completing the application, an enrollment specialist will call the family to determine if the family is income eligible for the program.
