When Might You Need Free & Low Cost Domestic Violence Services ?
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be:
- physical
- sexual
- emotional
- economic
- psychological
- or technological actions or threats of actions or
- other patterns of coercive behavior that influence another person within an intimate partner relationship.
This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone.
Domestic violence can go on for years and extends beyond romantic relationships to include parent-child and child-parent, friend-friend or even coworkers. Helpmate, Buncombe County’s domestic violence agency, offers a 24-hour hotline, shelter, counseling, court advocacy, and more.
Survivors of domestic abuse are welcome to walkin and access Helpmate’s services without an appointment Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm at the FJC.

Our Voice inspires hope and healing while ending sexual violence and human trafficking through education, counseling, and advocacy.
We provide support for survivors of sexual violence ages 13 and up in Buncombe County, as well as survivors of human trafficking ages 13 and up in Buncombe, McDowell, and Transylvania Counties.

ABCCM Transformation Village provides up to 100 beds of transitional housing for homeless women, mothers with children, and Veterans.
Transforming lives is through four developmental phases called Steps to Success. These include:

SPARC’S trauma informed Domestic Violence Intervention Program provides evidenced based counseling sessions to men and women who have committed abuse.
Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Make you feel uncomfortable or afraid?
- Often put you down, humiliate you, or make you feel worthless
- Constantly check up on what you are doing or where you are going?
- Try to stop you from seeing your own friends or family?
- Make you feel afraid to disagree or say ‘no’ to them?
- Constantly accuse you of flirting with other when this isn’t true
- Tell you how the household finances should be spent, or prevent you from having your own money?
- Stop you from having medical assistance?
- Scare or hurt you by being violent (ie. Hitting, choking, smashing things, locking you in, driving dangerously to frighten you)?
